Testing Extensions

Use the DEV-Extensions page in mStudio to test frontend fragments locally without changing the fragment URLs in your Extension's marketplace entry.

Test frontend fragments locally

  1. Make your frontend available at the address you want to use, for example http://localhost:4711.
  2. In mStudio, open Profile > Development > DEV-Extensions (/profile/extension-development).
  3. Enable the local override and enter the full URL of the frontend you want to load, for example http://localhost:4711/my-fragment?projectId=:projectId.

The override replaces the configured fragment URL for all installed Extensions. You can use any URL, including a different host or port, a path, and query parameters. Templating placeholders‍, such as :projectId, can be used in the path or query parameters.

Fragments render at their configured anchors in mStudio. You do not need to reload the page, and the Extension's marketplace entry remains unchanged.

Use the localStorage override

The localStorage override is also available as an alternative to the DEV-Extensions setting. Open the browser's developer console while mStudio is open and run:

localStorage["mstudio/fragment-dev-url"] =
"http://localhost:3000/?contextId=:contextId";

Adjust the URL, port, path, or query parameters to match your local frontend.

When to use a staging Extension

Use a hidden staging copy when you need a separate Extension setup for testing or demos. Extensions do not support multiple environments, so create a second Extension and configure it as hidden. You can still add it to a context to test or demonstrate it. See Staging‍ for details.
